A Square Meter Of Sensation

Looking back at some past uses of leather, we were interested in the use of mechanical flat leather belts in line shafting to transmit power to drive machines or lathes since as early as the Industrial Revolution. The dynamic relationship between the leather belts and the mechanical motors is interesting to us as there is a sense of irony when organic material like leather has “come alive” again through man-made machines. We hope to replicate that identity we observed through a series of five kinetic machines, which drive the leather belts with biomorphic movements, giving them animal like qualities. The subtle yet seemingly repulsive relationship between the leather belt and motor; the unique and contrasting touch of the metal and leather; the sound that resonates when the metal scrapes the motor, all harmoniously display the complex senses that the virtual world sometimes cannot provide us.
